Chitosan Oligosaccharide VS Chitosan

- Jun 02, 2023-

Chitosan and Chitosan Oligosaccharide are two similar polysaccharides derived from chitin, a natural biopolymer found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans and the cell walls of fungi. Following are some of the similarities and differences between chitosan and oligochitosan:

Similarities

1. The chemical structure of chitosan and oligochitosan is similar, both are composed of repeating units of glucosamine and N-acetylglucosamine.
2. Both are biodegradable, biocompatible and non-toxic, making them ideal for various medical, pharmaceutical and agricultural applications.
3. Both have been shown to have beneficial health effects such as antibacterial, antitumor and anti-inflammatory properties.
4. Both can be produced from chitin by similar processes such as deacetylation and enzymatic hydrolysis.

The Difference

1. Molecular weight

The key difference between chitosan and chitooligosaccharide is their molecular weight. Chitosan has a relatively high molecular weight, typically between 50,000 and over 1 million Daltons, while oligosaccharides have a relatively low molecular weight, ranging from a few hundred to several thousand Daltons.
2. Solubility

Chitosan is insoluble in water, but it dissolves at acidic pH due to its amino groups. On the other hand, oligochitosan is water-soluble, making it easier to handle and disperse.
3. Application

Chitosan is widely used in food, cosmetics, medicine and other industries as bioactive ingredients, stabilizers and drug carriers. On the other hand, due to its low molecular weight and biological activity, oligochitosan has attracted more and more attention as a nutraceutical and functional food.
4. Biological activity

The biological activity of chitosan and oligochitosan varies with molecular weight, degree of deacetylation and chain length. Chitosan has stronger antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects than chitooligosaccharides, which have stronger antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities.

In summary, chitosan and chitooligosaccharides have similar properties and applications, but differ in molecular weight, solubility, and biological activity.
